Football Defeated by No. 4 Wesley in Final Non-Conference Game

Box Score

DOVER, Del.Facing the No. 4 team in the country for its final non-conference game of the year, the Southern Virginia University football team fell on the road to Wesley College by a 47-7 score Saturday afternoon at Scott Miller Stadium in Dover, Delaware.

The Knights were effective on defense for the opening two Wolverine drives, forcing a punt and allowing just one first down, but Wesley caught on quickly with a nine-play, 75-yard drive midway through the first quarter that culminated with a one-yard touchdown run by Brandon Wright to put the Wolverines  up, 6-0.

Wesley got up 13-0 on its next possession when Robert Wiggs took a 44-yard pass from quarterback Joe Callahan for another score.

The Knights responded with a three-play, 70-yard drive touchdown drive to cut  into the Wolverine lead.  After a 20-yard Kyler Harris kickoff return to the Southern Virginia 30-yard line, Knight quarterback Mitch Stevenson completed a 38-yard pass to Michael Kilstrom to the Wesley 32-yard line on the first play of the drive.

Stevenson then connected with tight end Michael Carroll for a 14-yard gain to the Wesley 18-yard line that was followed by a five-yard delay of game penalty. Stevenson put the Knights on the board as he caught up with receiver Michael Goering for a 23-yard touchdown reception in a drive that took just 1:47 to complete.

"We played a good team today," said Southern Virginia head coach Jason Walker. "They have a lot of talent on the field and good coaches that know how to use their skills effectively. Callahan is a great quarterback and delivers the ball where it needs to be, and their tight end gave us a lot of trouble. Their defense is physical and pushed us around too much.

"We also have a good football team, but we need to learn how to make the most of our opportunities and then be able to take away opportunities from the opponent, but we didn't do either of those today."

The Wolverines went on to score 27 unanswered points in the second quarter to put the game out of reach by the half. Steve Koudossou took in an 80-yard touchdown reception on the first play of the ensuing Wolverine possession. Jamar Baynard scored on a one-yard run before Wolverine receiver Kyle George scored two consecutive touchdowns for Wesley to go up 40-7 with two minutes remaining in the half.

Wesley would add an insurance touchdown with five seconds left before the half to earn the final tally of its 47-7 victory.

Southern Virginia begins its inaugural season of play in the New Jersey Athletic Conference with a road game next Saturday at Kean University. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. in Union, New Jersey.
