BUENA VISTA Va.- The Southern Virginia football team lost a tough one Saturday afternoon to league opponent Kean University, 37-6, during the breast cancer awareness game. The Knights struggled with only 211 yards of total offense compared to the Cougars 502 yards.
The Knights (0-8, 0-7 NJAC) scored their only touchdown of the game in dramatic fashion when Tristen Burnett blocked a punt from the opponent's end zone and pounced on it for a touchdown toward the end of the second quarter.
The Knights saw action from both QB's Jacob Hatch and Shawn Honeycutt. Hatch was 11-17 with 97 yards and Honeycutt was 6-11 with 40 yards and an interception.
On the ground Shawn Honeycutt led the way in rushing with 28 yards on 4 carries, Jared Watts followed closely with 24 yards on 16 carries. Michael Carroll was the Knights top receiver with 3 catches for 52 yards.
The Knights' defense played hard recording 74 tackles with a blocked punt and blocked extra point attempt. Bill Katoa led the defense and had an impressive performance with 12 tackles, followed by both Morgan Smith and Dimitri Gomez who each had 6 tackles.
The Knights play their final away game of the season next week at The College of New Jersey on November 7th; kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
