BUENA VISTA, Va.—The Southern Virginia University football team fell 63-9 to Wesley College Saturday afternoon in New Jersey Athletic Conference action.
Wesley (2-2, 2-1 NJAC), who recently dropped out of the d3football.com top 25 after a loss to Christopher Newport last week, took the lead in the first quarter on a 27-yard touchdown pass. Just two minutes later the Wolverines scored on a nine-yard run to take a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.
The Knights (1-3, 0-3 NJAC) scored their first points of the game from a 29-yard Sam Horman field goal early in the second period. After a pair of Wesley touchdowns, Southern Virginia scored their first touchdown at home as Seth Hanson converted on an 11-yard pass from Ty Jones.
The Wolverines scored twice more in the second quarter, twice in the third and again in the fourth for a 63-9 win. The Knights had 183 yards of total offense compared to 537 yards for Wesley.
Joel Bergman picked up an interception and 43 yard return for the Knights which set up an unsuccessful field-goal attempt. Hanson led the team with 41 rushing yards while Bryan Phillips and receiver David Baety connected on a 48-yard pass for the longest play of the game.
Southern Virginia looks to bounce back as they head to Montclair State this Saturday at 1 p.m.
