About the Knights
The Southern Virginia football team hits the road after a thrilling 26-17 Homecoming victory over William Paterson last Saturday. The Knights are looking for their second NJAC win at Kean.
The Knights average 230 yards and 11 points per game. Defensively Southern Virginia has nine interceptions, five recovered fumbles and 14 sacks.
Ty Jones was named offensive rookie of the week last week after rushing 88 yards and scoring three touchdowns. Defensive lineman Mitch Orme also received conference honors as the defensive rookie of the week after returning a fumble 42 yards for a touchdown.
Southern Virginia Coach Joe DuPaix
Coach DuPaix comes to Southern Virginia from Brigham Young where he served two seasons (2011-12) as the Cougar's recruiting coordinator and running backs coach. Working under then head coach Bronco Mendenhall, DuPaix was part of the staff that led the Cougars to an 18-8 overall record, including back-to-back bowl wins and a 10-win season in 2011.
Before BYU, DuPaix coached the slot backs at the United States Naval Academy. During his three years in Annapolis, the Midshipmen appeared in three consecutive bowl games, won two Commander-In-Chief trophies and ranked in the top-ten nationally for rushing offenses each season. He was also part of Navy's 10-win season in 2009.
In the season opener Coach DuPaix led the Knights to their season-opening win at Earlham College. The Knights defeated the Quakers 28-18. Last week Coach DuPaix earned his first conference win over William Paterson, 26-17.
Outlook from Coach DuPaix
We are really excited to play really athletic football team this week. We have to play extremely well to beat them and that starts with ball security. We need to win the turnover battle to give us a chance against this well-coached program.
Both teams know what it feels like to win, and we have great momentum from last week, but they want to get the bad taste out of their mouth from their loss (at Salisbury).
Ty Jones and Mitch Orme are feeling great and are continuing to fight and become better players. It was good to see their hard work pay off and be represented as players of the week.
