Football Falls in Quadruple Overtime

Box Score

 By Nick Porter

BUENA VISTA, Va.—The Southern Virginia football team fell 28-25 in a heartbreaking quadruple-overtime loss to The College of New Jersey.

The Lions (2-7, 2-6 NJAC) scored the first points of the game, and only points in the first half, with six minutes left in the second quarter.

The Knights (2-7, 1-7 NJAC) received the second-half kick and scored on their opening drive to tie the game at seven. Later in the third quarter the Lions picked off quarterback Ty Jones and retuned it 23 yards for a go-ahead score.

Simi Moala scored his first career touchdown on a six-yard run with 10 minutes left in regulation.

With the score tied 14-14 the Knights elected to defend first in the first overtime, where the Lions kicked a 22-yard field goal. Southern Virginia answered back with a field goal of its own, a 20-yarder from Sam Horman.

Neither team scored in the second overtime due to a missed Horman field goal and a Mitch Orme interception, ending the Lion's possession.

Overtime number three started with The College of New Jersey which connected on a 25-yard pass for a touchdown and was followed by a successful two-point conversion.

In a must-score situation the Knights took three plays to allow Ty Jones a five-yard run for his second score of the game. Moala converted the extra-point attempt on a three yard run to the right side.

The Knights weren't able to find a first down or the uprights in the first half of the fourth overtime, ending their possession on a missed 38-yard field goal.

On their possession, the Lions were able to knock in a 25-yard field goal for the 28-25 win.

Jones finished the game with 73 passing yards and a career-high 135 rushing yards with the two touchdowns. Running back John Harris also had a career day, rushing 105 yards with a long of 46 yards.

Defensive back Neil Davis recorded an interception for the Knights, preventing a TCNJ touchdown in the first half.

The Knights hit the road next week in their final game of the season at Christopher Newport.
