Box Score By Nick Porter
BUENA VISTA, Va.—The Southern Virginia football team fell 35-0 in their home opener against No. 15 Salisbury University.
The Knights (1-2, 0-2 NJAC) seemed to put all of the pressure on Salisbury (3-0, 2-0 NJAC) after holding them scoreless in their first three drives of the game, forcing a fumble and then two punts.
The next three drives however, gave the Sea Gulls a 21-0 advantage going into the half.
The first score came with four minutes remaining in the second quarter with a one-yard rush. Three minutes later, after forcing a Southern Virginia punt, the Sea Gulls found themselves on the one yard line again, scoring their second touchdown.
With eight seconds remaining in the half the Knights failed a fourth-down conversion one on last attempt at the end zone. The turnover on downs gave Salisbury one last shot to score, which they did on a 48-yard touchdown pass as time expired for the half.
Salisbury scored twice in the third quarter to earn the 35-0 win.
Both teams fumbled twice, but the Knights lost the turnover battle throwing three interceptions. Salisbury's two fumbles, however, were their first turnovers of the year.
Runningback Michael Frye led Southern Virginia with 52 yards, and Shay Reid had the longest run of the game with a 36-yard rush in the second quarter.
The Knights are back in action at home against Wesley College on Saturday, October 1. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
