Men's Soccer Gets Conference Win Over Wesley In High-Scoring Match

Box Score

By Sam Armstrong

BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia men's soccer team pulled out their first conference win on Saturday night, besting Wesley College 6-3 at Knight Stadium in a high-scoring affair. Five different players scored for the Knights, who were led by senior Marrott Weekes with two goals and an assist in the contest.

The Wolverines (2-11, 0-4 CAC) jumped on the scoreboard first with a goal in just the second minute of the game. They would not hold the lead for long, however, as forward Edwin Hernandez buried a shot in the net just seven minutes later for the Knights (4-9, 1-3 CAC), and freshman Tyson Ricks followed suit four minutes after that for his second goal of the season.

Wesley evened the score in the 17th minute, but junior Aaron Terrazas gave the Knights the lead back at 3-2 just a few minutes before halftime after receiving an excellent through-ball from Weekes.

The pace did not slow down in a hotly-contested second period, which was started off by Weekes finishing an opportunity while surrounded by defenders to extend the Southern Virginia lead to 4-2. Four minutes after an impressive goal by Wesley, Weekes would finish his second goal of the match on an assist from Hernandez.

Things got a bit chippy in the second half, with the referee showing a card five separate times in the period – four for Wesley and one for Southern Virginia – with a red card given to Wesley's Nicholas Hood, who also led the Wolverines with two goals. Junior Ben Knapmeyer would take advantage of being up a man by scoring the Knights' sixth and last goal of the match off of a deflection by the keeper.

Matt Diede, Jackson Farnsworth, Jeremy Wilson, and the rest of the Knights' defense held strong all game long, creating chances upfield for Southern Virginia. Goalkeeper Colin Flynn picked up his fourth win of the season, finishing with three saves in the effort.

The Knights take on Mary Washington on Wednesday in the second game of a four-match home stretch. Kickoff will take place at 7:00 p.m. at Knight Stadium and will also be broadcasted live.
