Knights Fall Short Against Kean

BUENA VISTA, Va. – The Southern Virginia University football team suffered a tough 28-14 New Jersey Athletic Conference loss at home on Saturday afternoon. 

After receiving the opening kickoff, Kean (1-2, 1-1 NJAC) used over nine minutes to complete a 63-yard drive for a touchdown and an early lead. After forcing the Knights (0-4, 0-4 NJAC) to punt on the next two drives, the Cougars scored their second touchdown of the game.

With less than two minutes to go in the half, Southern Virginia had a punt blocked and recovered in the endzone by Kean, making the score 21-0 at the intermission.

The Knights were finally able to get on the scoreboard in the third quarter after forcing the Cougars to turn the ball over on downs. A three-play sixty-yard drive was capped by an Akiva Wedge touchdown reception of 53 yards from quarterback Ty Jones.

Late in the fourth quarter, Kean was able to find the endzone after a Southern Virginia fumble. In the ensuing possession, Ty Jones finished a 75-yard drive with a 33-yard touchdown pass to senior Michael Carroll.

Southern Virginia recorded 262 yards of total offense, with 150 of them coming on the ground. Jewka Patetefa led the Knights with 33 yards, followed by Wedge who had 31 yards rushing in addition to his 53-yard TD pass. John Harris had 29 yards on five carries and Seth Hanson recorded one carry for 24 yards.

Jones recorded 112 passing yards and two touchdowns. Defensively Mitch Orme recorded eight tackles (six solo). Neil Davis, Jackson Thompson and Skyler Cloward each had seven takedowns. Simi Moala, who had two carries on offense, also recorded an 11-yard sack.

The Knights head to top-25 ranked Wesley College next Saturday, kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Dover, Deleware.
