MONTCLAIR, N.J. —. The Southern Virginia University football team took a tough loss on Saturday afternoon against New Jersey Athletic Conference foe Montclair State University, falling to the Red Hawks 24-3.

The Knights(0-3, 0-3 NJAC)offense scored the game's first points on a Jackson Hatch 19-yard field goal. The Knights had an additional drive that placed them inside the red zone but were unable to score due to a lost fumble. At the end of the first quarter, Southern Virginia maintained the lead 3-0.

In the second quarter, the Red Hawks (2-0, 1-0 NJAC) offense adjusted to the staunch Knights defense. Hunter Daly started things with a 21-yard field goal to tie the game up at 3-3 five minutes into the second quarter. Almost three minutes later Montclair State's Ja'Quill Burch completed a 26-yard touchdown pass to receiver Willie Barr, giving the Red Hawks the lead going into the half 10-3.

The second half started on a kickoff return from Kason Campbell going 91-yards, scoring in the first fifteen seconds of the quarter and extending the lead to 17-3. The last points of the game came in the middle of the third quarter with Burch earning his second passing touchdown of the day finding Stepp Oziegbe for 15-yards, increasing the score to the final 24-3.

For the Knights, Akiva Wedge earned a season-high with 90 yards rushing. The defense was led by Albert Green IV and Neil Davis, who each recorded seven tackles, with teammates Jason Siaosi and Mason Fauatea each collecting a sack.

Southern Virginia will continue their road schedule on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Kean University at 12:00 p.m.
