BUENA VISTA, Va. — The Southern Virginia University football team fell short homecoming weekend at Knight Stadium against Emory & Henry, falling Saturday afternoon to the Wasps 56-14.

The Knights (2-3, 1-2 ODAC) struck first when Davis Pinkston broke loose for a 57-yard run to put Southern Virginia up early 7-0 and cap off a 3-play, 69-yard drive in 27 seconds.

After beginning the season 0-2, Emory & Henry (3-2, 2-1 ODAC) had won its last three games. The Wasps continued with that momentum, responding to the Knights score with one of their own with Grayson Overstreet tying the game on a 6-yard run, 7-7 (following a successful Matt Seals PAT.)

With the score tied 7-7 at the start of the second quarter, the Wasps rolled off 21 unanswered points following another to extend their lead to 28-7 at the half.

Emory & Henry began the third quarter with the ball and immediately made the most of the opportunity on a Hunter Taylor connection with Derrick Yates for 77 yards for the score for Taylor's second passing touchdown of the game and now a 35-7 lead. The Wasps next possession the duo once again found the endzone to increase their lead 42-7.

Southern Virginia's following possession resulted in what would be their final score of the game. Pinkston completed four consecutive completions, and then an 11-yard run from Akiva Wedge set up the Knights for a 25-yard touchdown pass from Pinkston to Josh Newman, making the score now 42-14 (following a Conner Kendell PAT kick.)

The Wasps added 14 more unanswered points on route to a 42-point victory over Southern Virginia.

Pinkston threw for 186 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception on the afternoon while recording 41 rushing yards, one touchdown on four attempts for the Knights.

Southern Virginia's Akiva Wedge led the team with 68 rushing yards on 19 attempts while Newman led the receiving core with six catches for 80 yards and one touchdown.

Jacob Taloa led the Knights in tackles for the second time this season, collecting 11 total tackles and also added a team-high two pass breakups. Michael Benjamin and Matthew Blake each tallied nine tackles while the only turnover coming on a Justin Mitchell interception for the Knights.

Southern Virginia will complete its two-game homestand next week as they host Randolph-Macon Saturday, Oct. 19, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m.
