Southern Virginia Versus NC Wesleyan Week Four Preview

BUENA VISTA, VA. — The Southern Virginia Football team welcomes NC Wesleyan to Knight Stadium Saturday, September 24, for the team's USA South Conference Opener at 1 pm.

"We have many similarities to NC Wesleyan," said Mulitalo. "From our overall records, to how we play, and to how we score, we are very identical. I believe it is going to be a great game, and I am anxious to see how the team is going to step up to the challenge."

The Series:
The Knights and the Battling Bishops throw down for the third time in program history with the series tied between the two teams 1-1. The first matchup came in Spring of 2021, where the Knights showcased a thrilling 28-21 victory, where linebacker, Jason Siaosi, scored the game-winning touchdown off of a 16 yard fumble recovery. The Bishops avenged their loss seven months later in November, taking the 19-10 victory.

Impact Players:
The offense will continue to be run through quarterback Colten Shumway, who's completing 59.57 percent of his passes. Shumway will have his eyes on the lookout for his primary target Jireek Washington. Washington is coming off an impressive performance against No. 19 Randolph-Macon, recording six receptions for 101 yards.

Defensively, Jahl Freeman, and Elijah Tasini have been finding their rhythm within the system and will look to have an immediate impact on the team's performance Saturday afternoon. Colby Hyder sits atop the team in tackles with 25 tackles while Maekeli Tuinakauvadra and Kymani VaiVai will hold down the trenches. In week three against Randolph-Macon, Tuinakauvadra recorded four tackles and one and a half sacks.

Recent addition to the team, Michael Brown, will look to score crucial points with the Special Team unit. Brown is currently perfect on his kicks, going 3-for-3 on field goals on the year while leading the team in points with 12.

Keys to the Game:
With a young offensive line, the unit needs to hold their ground in order to succeed. The O-Line needs to offer tighter protection for Shumway to make the correct reads, and to allow running backs Jacob Wood and Alex Lanktree to run the ball hard. Defensively, the team needs to make key stops and tackles throughout the game to keep the ball in the offense's hands. "Tackle on defense and protect the ball on offense", stated Coach Ed.
